Legal Stuff
Here are the Steps to a Legal Marriage in the U.S. Virgin Islands
- Find someone you’d like to marry (since you’re looking at a wedding website presumably this has already happened).
- Download these two forms:
- Complete these two forms and return to the Superior Court along with a letter stating your date of arrival to the island, the length of your stay, and the desired date of the ceremony.
- If either or both applicants have been divorced or widowed, it is required that a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate be filed along with the application.
- Note: Do not have the forms notarized. That will be done when you arrive on island and pickup your forms from the court.
- Mail the documents to: Superior Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands – Family Division PO Box 929, Christiansted, VI 00821-0929
- Upon receipt of the Application by the Court, an eight day waiting period is required during which time the couple’s application is posted for public inspection.
- Applicants are required to appear before the Clerk of the Court, or her designee, to be examined under oath. Some form of identification is required. No physical examination or blood test is required.
- The court fees are $50 for the Application and $50 License fee. These can be paid by certified check or money order when you mail in the applications. The check or money order should be made out to “Superior Court”.
Court Office Hours 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays (and there’s a lot of them). For a fee of $150, the court will open on Saturday (except Carnival Saturday), and you must call in advance. Additionally, by pre-arrangement and $150 per couple surcharge, the court will be available on Sundays and holidays between 9:30am and 10:30am.
